Experience tells us that the main path to wisdom is, er ... experience. Just hearing, or listening to something is definitely not enough. Yet vast numbers of people are not even aware of the difference between the wisdom of authentic knowledge and mere understanding.
What's the difference, the distinction between authentic knowing and simply knowing about it? Experience! Experience makes the difference, it's huge! Yet there's no English word for this distinction, although the difference this distinction makes is crucial.
So we've borrowed a word in Zen Buddhism: koan, koans plural which is pronounced as: co-an. Say the "co" in co-create, the "an" in animated.
We use koan to mean a distinction. A particular viewpoint, another perspective. A alternate way of viewing a situation, an incident, or even an expression. You will feel an energy surge once you "get," understand a koan, that tells you it increases your inner power. But realize that without investing the energy needed to cement your understanding, it doesn't last.
Koans assist you to improve your personal power which then improves your context. Now since context affects your results significantly, when used properly koans help you to be more effective and to succeed in life.
Our usage is, of course, different to the usual Zen meaning of koan.
Koans do anything
Okay... almost anything. The many hundreds range from esoteric to very obvious, with most koans somewhere between.
