There's Joy in Knowing the Truth
I quickly checked in my wallet. Yes, there was way less money there than there should be. I also knew where I'd made the mistake - I hadn't counted my change from the restaurant we'd just left.
Luiza and I had just had a bite to eat, paid for with a hundred pound note. Yet they'd only given me change for ten pounds. I was ninety pounds short! And many years ago, in London, England, ninety pounds was a sizeble sum.
Straight Back to the Restaurant
We went straight back to the restaurant, stopping neither to Pass Go nor Collect 200. Megan, our waitress was there, as was the cashier, and we explained the problem.
Our waitress Megan was sympathetic yet I was surprised to find the cashier was hostile. She was totally uninterested in our missing money, she neither wanted to refund us nor to accept any responsibility for short-changing us. But Megan was honest, she confirmed she could check up on our story.
Right then, even though it was the middle of the day, she checked the till balance by cashing up. As expected, it showed the till had around ninety pounds too much, confirming our plight.
The Till had our Missing Money
The hostile cashier wasn't convinced and tried to persuade Megan not to give us the money. But fortunately, Megan was totally honest, and just ignored her. She realized the restaurant had made a mistake, and gave us our missing ninety pounds back.
Were we delighted? Indeed. We definitely had some trepidation as the hostile waitress attempted to persuade Megan not to refund our missing money. Actually, pure joy is a better description of the feeling I had when Megan recognized the truth, over-ruled the hostile cashier, and refunded us our money.
The joy as well as the relief showed clearly on my face. It was almost tangible.

But was this Joy or Happiness?
Yet was this joy, a real reflection of my internal state? Or was it happiness, which arises from the outside circumstances? The problem with happiness is that it depends on the external situation. Other people will change, as will your situation, and since neither are completely under your control, your happiness will also change.
Far better to realize you have a fundamental choice to make, and choose to view things positively rather than negatively. You make this choice every time you react or respond to any change in your circumstances. Being positive, and choosing to look for the positive no matter what happens, will ensure that your internal stance is joyous rather than depressed.
Remember you can always choose to take the high road rather than the low road.
Far better to realize you have a fundamental choice to make, and choose to view things positively rather than negatively. You make this choice every time you react or respond to any change in your circumstances. Being positive, and choosing to look for the positive no matter what happens, will ensure that your internal stance is joyous rather than depressed.
Remember you can always choose to take the high road rather than the low road.
